Congratulations on your new puppy! The “hold it an hour for as many months old” rule of thumb is for when you crate a puppy during the daytime. We bring home most of our puppies at 8 weeks old and most (not all) will sleep through the night by the end of the first week. If your puppy is still not sleeping through the night you might take a look at these two articles:

Every puppy is different. Some will take longer to adjust than others. Hopefully, yours will start sleeping through the night soon. Good luck with your puppy!

I just brought home my 8 week old puppy and after reading a bunch online, im surprised you said yours slept through the night with no accidents? I read that puppies can only hold it an hour for as many months they’re aged. I’ve taken my puppy out around every 2 hours, all night. When i’ve slept through her cry she’s soiled and peed her crate, even when peeing right before bed. Is this normal behavior? can I expect her to sleep through the night anytime soon?

Thanks!

I will be getting an 8 week old puppy at the end of next month. I plan to crate train but I noticed you mentioned not crating them for more than 2 hours at a time. I work during the day with an hour lunch break in which I will come home and let him out, but even then he will be in the crate for longer than 2 hours at a time. What do you suggest?
Thank you!

I’m glad everything is going well with your puppy. We don’t usually train a specific behavior for our puppies to perform to alert us they need to go outside. In the past they did one of three things. They would wait at the back door when they had to potty. They would pace back in forth between me and the back door. They would bark. I didn’t voluntarily teach them to do any of these things, but I obviously reinforced the behavior by letting them outside when they did these behaviors. That being said I do plan on training my current puppy to push a button when she wants to go outside. I’ll write a blog post about that in the near future.

We got a cavapoo puppy at 8 weeks. She is almost 10 weeks now. She crate trained easily sleeps all night, sits and lays with treats and does her “duty” outside in the same spot when I get her out on time. We had the same issue of having to go at the same time! My question is how do I teach her to tell me she needs to go out? This is my struggle.
Thank you

I rescued an 8 week old lab mix. He was found on the streets with his Mom (a lab) & one sibling. He was in foster home for a few weeks prior to adoption. My issue is nipping (hard) at times when playing & wont calm down. Replacing body parts with chew toys does not always work nor does “yelping” and ignoring for a minute. Suggestions? I’m starting personal training this week & group classes next month. I’ve had him now for 4 days.

Reading your affirming words was reassuring.
It’s so good when someone talks sense from a practical background. Puppies are so cute it’s so important to see the dog that will emerge from all of this as well. Thanks again

I read this article in several stages. While I was reading my baby, Robbie is already hungry. I will go feed him and continue.
