There are many Native Americans living here (as one would expect) and almost all of them have dogs running around their properties. No purebreds are to be found among them. One evening, I came home to discover a large, red dog with floppy ears and a long tail sitting in front of my gate. He didn’t shy away as I approach to open the gate, rather, he acted as though he was there to welcome me home from work. He was friendly and I was amused by his antics as he hopped around in apparent happiness to see me. This, in spite of the fact that I had never laid eyes on him before. The first day I didn’t feed him so as to encourage him to return to the home, I assumed he had wandered away from. The second day and for the next week or so, I fed him and enjoyed watching him play ever-so gently with my 20 lb Jack Russel Terrier, Sadie. I had been advertising on social media in the area to locate his owners who, by that time, I was sure, must be looking for him since he displayed definitite signs of either extensive interaction with someone who was working to train him or deep, innate intelligence, more likely than not, a combination of both. Since no one came forth to claim him, I decided to let him stay. My rural property was in need of a caretaker during the day while I am away at work and he seemed to be not only perfectly suited to the task, but absolutely thrilled to perform it for me. Fast forward a month or so and my vet advised me that, if I wanted him to stay around, I should have him neutered. If I wanted him to wander off, I should just leave him intact. Snip, snip! Here we are almost two years on and he sleeps in my recliner every evening. I have, with my vet’s help, determined that he is a Southern Black Mouth Cur. Almost 75 lbs, and 28 in tall, he is my trusted companion and is completely enamoured with Sadie who has grudgingly accepted him as her companion and running buddy. They are adorable together. He has various names depending his behaviour at the time but the ladies the vet’s office know him as “Big”. I love this dog and consider myself richly blessed by his choice to adopt us as his new home…

She’s a real sweetheart and acts and looks just like the description and picture in your article. Just stay away from cats and squirrels.
