I adopted Linus from the Carson Animal Shelter over 7 years ago and he did have issues. He had fleas…lots of fleas. I think he was a bit anemic because he was constantly sleeping his first couple days home. He also had worms and some kind of stomach virus that both required extra meds from my veterinarian. At the time the adoption fee from the shelter was $37, but I spent an additional $250 on vet bills after brining him home. I’m not sure if this was an isolated incident or if it’s common at the Carson Animal Shelter. However, the staff was very nice and they did give initial vaccinations and microchipping.

Since picking up Linus over 7 years ago I’ve had many experiences with dogs (rescues, shelters, fostering, guide dogs) and if I were interested in adopting a pet dog I’d probably look to the rescue groups. Most good rescue groups will screen the potential adoption families and they will have a good idea if the dog is suitable for a specific person/family. When I was fostering we got a good idea of the personalities of the dogs and also got initial vet checks, worming, vaccinations, and spay or neuter.
